WHY SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING?
We value the social and emotional learning of children (SEL) — so much so that we created an entire children’s book series to teach powerful principles of emotional intelligence. As parents, teachers, and caregivers, we are quick to invest in the physical and mental development of our children. We’ll sign up for the soccer team, bring the snacks, and drive the carpool. We’ll help with homework, spend hours creating lesson plans, and encourage good grades.
But what about the social-emotional development of our children and students? Are we equally invested?
Decades of research has shown that children with higher levels of social and emotional intelligence are happier and more successful. In fact, their emotional intelligence is a stronger predictor of well-being and achievement than their IQ alone. Children with high EQ are able to form and maintain healthy relationships, have higher levels of self-confidence, and are more likely to excel academically. The best part? Despite the background, circumstance, or temperament of our children and students, social and emotional intelligence can be learned. It seems that equipping our children with social and emotional skills is one of the best things we can do to set them up for success in all aspects of life.
Whether you’re at home with your kids or teaching students in the classroom, we invite you to use the EQ Explorers series as a tool to foster the social and emotional learning of children. We’ve created lesson plans that can be used both at home and in the classroom to give you helpful tools to expound on the principles taught in the books. We’re confident that teaching and modeling these powerful principles will give children the knowledge and skills they need to live big, happy lives!
